| If you have dark healthy teeth the treatment of choice for
whitening has moved on from crowns and veneers to bleaching. When dentists talk about
whitening they describe
the amount of whitening in terms of the "number of

We regularly bleach patients teeth 8 to 10 shades whiter as shown above. There are numerous systems of whitening teeth on the market, most of which do not noticeably whiten teeth. The British Dental Association recently advised dentists that "off the shelf" products may only address stain removal and not actually "whiten" at all.

The bleached effect MUST be maintained either by use of home bleaching trays or top up BriteSmile procedures. A heavy smoker may need to utilize both home bleaching trays and top up BriteSmile procedures to maintain a bleached effect.
Caveat: please note the above refers to people with "dark healthy teeth". If you have light healthy teeth then it is impossible to bleach your teeth 8 shades lighter and a single BriteSmile treatment will only bleach your teeth to their natural colour, something like the light shade above. It is possible to bleach beyond your natural whiteness but this involves a lot more time and effort.
