Cerec technology has come to Swansea.
Cerec is a system that captures an infra-red impression of the tooth to
be restored. The CAD/CAM software then directs a milling
machine to shape a piece of colour-matched biocompatible ceramic material into a filling or a crown that can
then be bonded onto the tooth.
Because the restoration (filling or crown) is computer designed and
machined, the accuracy of fit is always very very good indeed.
Benefits:
-
Save time with single visit crowns
-
No temporary crowns or veneers
-
Single visit means only one injection
-
5 year guarantee available
-
Aesthetics - indistinguishable from a natural tooth
-
Natural appearance does not deteriorate over time.
-
Biocompatible - same wear properties as natural
tooth
Advantages of Cerec over white fillings:
-
Appearance is exactly like a natural tooth
-
No deterioration with the appearance over time
(white fillings stain)
-
No voids in the filling. Voids cause pain
when flying in an airplane and predispose to early fracture or
failure.
-
No shrinkage. Shrinkage causes margins to
deteriorate and stain, and can result in failure of the filling
through leakage.
-
Much greater hardness and durability. Cerec
restorations are unlikely to break.
-
Greater biocompatibility. Conventional white
fillings wear more than enamel and conventional crowns are usually harder than
enamel so they wear the opposing enamel. Cerec wears at the same
rate as enamel.
-
Cerec can be used for all sizes of fillings
including very large whereas plastic white filling materials can only
be used for small and medium sized fillings
