What is gum disease?Gum diseases are infections in the gums and the bone that surrounds the teeth. Most people who have gum diseases aren't aware of it. It rarely hurts, until it is well developed, when pain is associated with loose teeth and multiple abscesses. The main cause of gum diseases is accumulation of plaque. Plaque is the sticky film of food and bacteria that is daily deposited upon teeth.
How is it detected?Detection of gum disease is achieved through measurements with gum health probes. At this practice gum health screening is carried out routinely with a six monthly check up.
How is it treated?Treatment is based upon meticulous cleaning, this is achieved with oral hygiene instruction in relation to routine tooth brushing, cleaning between teeth and specific problem areas, in conjunction with professional cleaning and use of antibiotic and antiseptic aids. Tissue regeneration technology can be used in some cases. Patients who smoke should give up otherwise treatment is less effective.
